A Successful Family Story Hour with Lauren Freckles - June 17, 2023
On June 17, 2023, Reading Legacies hosted a fun “Family Story Hour” at the North Promenade field in Liberty Station. Lauren Freckles, author of the Babbling Beth series, and Mango the Dog read to the children and families in attendance. Reading Legacies Board Member, Shaun Wiley, encouraged parents to read to their child(ren) as a way to enrich the parent-child relationship and to create lasting memories.
We are grateful for the volunteers from Honda Helpful Hands that helped this event run smoothly. Kathryn Johnson, library manager at the Logan Heights Branch, also in attendance, provided an interactive table with library resources for families to take home along with a free book provided by Reading Legacies.
We hope to have encouraged parents and caregivers to continue reading to children and we look forward to seeing all the families at our next Family Story Hour!
My name is NicoleVargas. I joined the Reading Legacies team in January 2023. I have a BA in Child Development from Point Loma Nazarene University and 6 years’ experience working with children from ages infancy to adolescence. My role as the Storybook Readers Program Manager is to oversee the programing and implementation of our Youth Readers and Storybook Inspirations programs. As a child development professional, I have firsthand experience seeing the immense impact that reading aloud to children has on their early literacy skills and relationship building within the family and community. One of my favorite children’s books is If You Give A Mouse A Cookie by Laura Numeroff.
