Betty Mohlenbrock, M.Ed.

Educator, Reading Specialist

Betty is an educator, reading specialist, Founder and CEO (Retired) of Family Literacy Foundation, United Through Reading, and Founder and President of Reading Legacies (her current endeavor).  

Betty’s numerous awards include The Congressional Medal of Honor Society Community Service Hero Award for United Through Reading, the Peter Drucker Award for Non- Profit Innovation, LEAD San Diego Visionary Award, Traditional Home “The Classic Woman Award”, University of Illinois Alumni Humanitarian Award, Coronado Legend Award, the Daughters of the American Revolution Medal of Honor, and the George Washington Honor Medal from Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge,  San Diego Regional East County Chamber of Commerce 20th Annual Women in Leadership Award, the Success Above Self Award from the Rotary Club of Coronado, San Diego Business Journal’s Business Women of the Year Finalist. 

Her educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts, as well as a Master’s Degree in Education with a specialty in teaching Reading. Both degrees are from the University of Illinois. 

Richard M. Radosh

Richard M. Radosh, Attorney at Law, is a sole practitioner helping clients with wills, trusts, philanthropy planning and corporate governance. He is also an avid trumpet player performing with the Coastal Communities Concert Band. Richard serves on the Board of Directors and as Development Director of the Coastal Communities Concert Band Foundation which supports and operates the band.

During 2009, He served as principal researcher on the San Diego Jewish Community Foundation study entitled “Feeding the Hungry in San Diego.” During 2007, Richard worked as a temporary executive for United Through Reading®, Betty Mohlenbrock’s previous organization, assisting with the organization’s transition to its current CEO.

J.R. Raines

JR Raines has over 25 years of comprehensive bank experience; serving in positions within Union Bank that include Priority Banking, Retail Banking and Personal Trust prior to the position of Foundation Officer within the MUFG Union Bank Foundation in 2005 and later promoted to Vice President, Senior Foundation Manager.  JR assisted in the transition of the MUFG Union Bank Foundation to the US Bank Foundation following the 2023 acquisition and retired in Jan 2024.  JR has received numerous awards from nonprofits over the course of his career and continues to be an active volunteer in the community.

JR served in the United States Navy Submarine Fleet and has been a small business owner.  In 2013 he became a living kidney donor.

Tori Nelson Calisch is an experienced nonprofit professional with her Masters in Nonprofit Administration (MNA) from University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business and her undergraduate degree (BA) in Economics from Wellesley College.  Tori’s work experience includes three years at San Diego Foundation as a Manager of Community Impact, involved in every aspect of grantmaking for the Early Childhood Initiative including pandemic response, and five years of United Way work experience, including program development and fundraising in support of the Born Learning and Success by 6 campaigns. 

Tori is deeply committed to Reading Legacies’ mission of facilitating supportive relationships for children to be read aloud to by their families and friends. As a nonprofit professional, military spouse and parent, she understands the impact of these positive childhood experiences. Most importantly, she believes that all children should feel loved, safe and valued. Throughout her career and volunteer leadership, Tori has been dedicated to education and literacy, specifically working to ensure that all children have the supportive relationships they need to be best prepared for school and life success, especially for children and families furthest from opportunity. Tori values how Reading Legacies’ critical programs, including Book Bridges and First Teachers, build these meaningful connections and truly impact the lives of the families supported.

Derek Cox, MBA

After retiring from professional football, Derek earned his Master’s in Business Administration at UCLA Anderson School of Management and is an Independent Sports Agent and Conultant.

Derek believes that the Reading Legacies initiative can bring much needed motivation to youth. Many of them struggle with motivation and understanding how they can make a difference in the world. This program shows them that they can make a difference in the world at the most important place – home.

Courtney Dade

CEO/Founder, CSD Marketing and Consulting

Courtney S. Dade is the Founder and CEO of CSD Marketing and Consulting, a boutique agency based in San Diego that specializes in digital strategy, branding, and community engagement.

With over 20 years of experience in marketing, education, and organizational development, Courtney has worked with nonprofits, small businesses, and corporate partners to build campaigns that drive both social and economic impact. She is passionate about literacy, mentorship, and creating opportunities for underrepresented communities to thrive.

In addition to leading CSD Marketing, Courtney serves as an educator and consultant, developing programs that equip entrepreneurs and organizations with the tools to grow sustainably. Her community involvement includes collaborations with local organizations that promote education, workforce development, and cultural enrichment across San Diego County.

Courtney considers her greatest accomplishment to be raising her son, Caleb Dade, who is an actor, performer, and philanthropist in his own right.

Pat Giles

Retired Educator, SDUSD; Community Volunteer

Pat was an educator for the San Diego Unified School District for 33 years.  She taught all academic subjects in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade classrooms.  As a middle school instructor, she taught social studies and language arts in 6th and 7th grade. In addition, she enjoyed starting choruses at her schools then finally partnering to put on music theater productions.

 After retirement, she began to volunteer with United Through Reading at the Las Colinas Women’s Prison. She worked with the Parent Care program, holding classes and recording readers.  She entered data at the office from surveys of program participants and their children’s caregivers. Pat became a program manager for Reading Legacies, working with high school students who spent an hour per week reading with pre-school children in their neighborhoods in order to earn community service hours. Most recently she volunteered monthly at the Coronado Public Library, recording adults reading to younger family members.

She graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Elementary Education and from San Diego State University received an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction.

Vivian Lin

CEO, ATX Draft Arena Football Team

Vivi Lin, a trailblazer in sports and entertainment with over 25 years of experience, is the first Asian American woman to own and lead a professional football team. Lin, who served as the VP of Business Development and Player Engagement for the San Diego Strike Force, took over as the team’s owner/CEO in 2020. Her leadership brought the club back after the COVID-19 pandemic and the team’s most successful year.

Building on her success with the San Diego Strike Force, Lin joined a team of five executives and launched the privately owned Frontwave Arena, which is set to be the future home of the Los Angeles Clippers’ G-League team.

Her extensive background includes leading marketing and events for the US National Surf Team and being one of the creators of the San Diego Zoo Global Academy, which now generates over $350 million in annual revenue.

Lin’s current project is to launch her a professional arena football team in Austin, Texas, in 2025, making her the first woman to launch a professional football expansion team.

Lin graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with an undergraduate degree in Educational Psychology and Communications. She received a master’s in Sports Business Leadership from Columbia University and graduated in the top two in her class with an Executive MBA in Global Sports Business Management from the University of East London.

Eric is the Senior Vice President at the Redlands Corporation.  A graduate of the University of Arizona, Eric continues to serve on his alma mater’s business school’s National Board of Advisors at the Eller College of Management.

A member of the San Diego community since 1999, Eric has served as a board member for numerous other nonprofits including a hospital foundation, an educational and scholarship fund and an  Alzheimer’s center.  

Rob Mills

Rob Mills is the President of Mills Foundation, a San Diego based Family Foundation with a focus on helping kids, animals, sports, and the environment.

Rob grew up in Champaign, IL where he attended Champaign Central High School.  His love of sports helped him attain letters in football, basketball, baseball and golf.

Rob graduated from University of Colorado at Boulder with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Affairs in 1995 and studied abroad in Geneva, Switzerland and Aix-En-Provence, France.

After moving to Chicago, Illinois in 1996, he worked at American National Bank in their exclusive Rotational Management Training Program until the fall of 1997.  Rob went on to live and work on Denver, CO and Tucson, AZ until arriving in San Diego in 2003.  There he spent time in the Real Estate business from 2004 to 2008.

Rob started his own company, Mills Financial Investments Inc. in 2013 and closed the business in 2021.  Rob is now a freelance investor, primarily in the stock market and Real Estate. 

Linda Rankin

Linda holds a Bachelor of Arts from Chico State and a master’s degree from USIU. She taught at the elementary level for 38 years before retiring from the San Diego Unified School District. 

Following retirement, Linda has continued her interest in supporting children through her volunteer work at United Through Reading and now Reading Legacies since 2008. She has also contributed as both a volunteer and board member with the La Mesa Historical Society and the SDMA East County Art Council, which provided art instruction to underserved schools. Currently, she serves as a board member of Alpha Delta Kappa/Eta chapter, a philanthropic educational sorority dedicated to supporting children and their needs. 

Linda’s interests include theatre, travel, antiquing, and reading, with a particular fondness for mysteries.

Shaun has been involved with marketing efforts for nearly 20 years. His current role as an executive marketing consultant at ZUZA Marketing Asset Management allows him to work closely and guide business leadership from various industries across the globe. 

Before moving to California in 2014, he served as Director of Admissions with the Art Institutes in Georgia and Florida. As an alumni of Georgia State University, he holds a dual-Bachelors in Journalism and Sociology. His secret to success: Treat others like they want to be treated.

We are honored

To carry on the legacy of Stephen R. Lewis, M.D.

A beloved and respected physician, and family friend. His life was an exemplary model of dedication to family and community, and a strong belief in providing a foundation for children and youth to be successful in life. To that end, our Board of Trustees has established the Stephen R. Lewis, M.D. Legacy Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation with the purpose of funding the leadership position of Reading Legacies, the Stephen R. Lewis, M.D. Presidential Chair.

Reading Legacies is working closely with his family to deliver programs with highest integrity that will fulfill his vision for children and youth. The Board is both grateful for and humbled by the generosity of so many of Steve’s family and friends. Together, we are paying a high tribute to this wonderful man’s life.
