The Power of a Mother Reading Stories

David John Downey lived from October 28, 1941, until December 27, 2025. In his 84 years, he inspired countless lives with his wisdom, kindness, calm presence, and “rustic” humor. He preferred being called “Dave,” and his mantra was “KOKO,” for “Keep On, Keep’n On.”

The son of John C. Downey and Beulah Mae (Sheets) Downey, Dave grew up in Canton, Illinois. His father was a coal miner who could not read or write, and his mother, with a seventh-grade education, read to Dave every night. That simple act sparked a lifelong love of reading. Dave eagerly rode his bike to the Canton library, thrilled to check out any book he could, sports stars.

Under the guidance of his teachers and coaches, Dave excelled academically and athletically. He became a basketball star at Canton High School and later at the University of Illinois, setting records that still stand today. During his Illini career, he played alongside Reading Legacies founder Betty’s husband, Bill, and Doug, the father of Rob Mills, our Board of Trustees member – blending his love of basketball with his lifelong friendships.
